NEW HAVEN, CT – JOSE’S TAX SERVICE – APRIL 18, 2026

If you’ve been running a side hustle in the Elm City, whether you’re selling handmade crafts on Etsy, driving for a rideshare app, or taking payments via Venmo for your freelance consulting, you’ve likely encountered a specific piece of mail this year: Form 1099-K.

As we hit the tail end of the 2026 tax filing season, many New Haven residents are finding these forms in their inboxes or mailboxes for the first time. There has been a lot of noise surrounding the IRS reporting thresholds over the last few years. My name is Jose Morales, and here at Jose’s Tax Service, we’ve seen the confusion firsthand.

The most important thing to remember is this: Do not panic. Receiving a 1099-K does not automatically mean you owe the IRS a massive chunk of change. It simply means your digital paper trail has caught up with your bank account.

What Exactly Is Form 1099-K?!

Form 1099-K, officially titled "Payment Card and Third Party Network Transactions," is an information return used by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to track payments received through third-party processors. Think of it as a report card for your digital sales. Platforms like Venmo, PayPal, Cash App, Etsy, and eBay are required to send these forms to both you and the IRS when you hit certain payment milestones.

For the 2025 tax year (which we are filing right now in 2026), the federal reporting threshold remained at $20,000 in gross payments and more than 200 transactions. However, the IRS has been signaling a move toward a much lower $600 threshold for years. Even if you didn't hit the $20,000 mark, some platforms may have issued the form anyway, or you may live in a state with lower reporting requirements.

Understand the Difference Between Gross and Taxable Income!

This is where most side hustlers get tripped up. The number you see in Box 1a of your 1099-K is your gross proceeds. This is the total amount of money that passed through the platform before any fees, refunds, or expenses were taken out.

Important Warning: The IRS receives a copy of this exact form. If the gross income reported on your tax return is lower than the amount on your 1099-K without a proper explanation, it may lead to penalties or automated flags on your account.

However, you only pay taxes on your profit, not your gross sales. To find your profit, you must subtract your "Ordinary and Necessary" business expenses from that gross number.

Essential Deductions for New Haven Side Hustlers!

If you are filing as a sole proprietor (which most side hustlers are), you will report this income on Schedule C (Form 1040). To lower your tax liability, you must be aggressive but accurate with your deductions.

Here are the most common deductions we help our clients at Jose’s Tax Service identify:

  1. Platform Fees: Etsy, eBay, and Amazon take a cut of every sale. Venmo and PayPal charge transaction fees for "Goods and Services" payments. These are 100% deductible.
  2. Shipping Costs: If you’re mailing products out of the New Haven Post Office on Brewery Street, every cent spent on postage, boxes, bubble wrap, and tape is a deduction.
  3. Home Office Deduction: If you use a specific part of your New Haven apartment or home exclusively for your business, you can deduct a portion of your rent, mortgage interest, and utilities.
  4. Supplies and Materials: For Etsy sellers, this includes the raw materials used to create your goods. For consultants, this could include specialized software or subscriptions.
  5. Marketing and Advertising: Did you run Instagram ads or print business cards to hand out at the Wooster Square Farmers Market? Those are deductible business expenses.

What If the 1099-K Includes Personal Payments?!

One of the biggest headaches in 2026 has been the "mixed-use" account. If you use the same Venmo account to accept payments for your side business and to get reimbursed by friends for dinner at Frank Pepe’s, your 1099-K might be inflated.

Instructional Step: If your 1099-K includes personal gifts or reimbursements, you must account for this on your return to ensure you aren't taxed on non-business income. You should:

  • Report the full amount on Schedule C.
  • Deduct the personal portion as an "Other Expense" or adjustment, labeling it clearly as "Non-business personal reimbursements."
  • In the future, use separate accounts for business and personal transactions to avoid this complexity.

The "Hobby vs. Business" Distinction!

The IRS makes a clear distinction between a hobby and a business. This is critical because if the IRS classifies your side hustle as a hobby, you generally cannot deduct expenses in excess of your income.

To be considered a business, you must demonstrate a profit motive. This usually means showing a profit in three out of the last five years. At Jose’s Tax Service, we help you evaluate your side hustle's status to ensure you are filing correctly and maximizing your tax planning strategies.

Deadlines and Penalties!

Since today is April 18, 2026, the primary deadline for individual returns has just passed or is occurring today due to weekend/holiday shifts. If you have not filed yet and you received a 1099-K, you must take immediate action:

  • File an Extension: If you can’t get your paperwork together, file Form 4868 to get an extra six months. Remember, an extension to file is not an extension to pay.
  • Pay the Estimated Tax: Use Form 1040-ES to pay what you think you owe to avoid late-payment penalties.
  • Keep Records: The IRS can audit returns for up to three years (and sometimes longer). Keep your Etsy spreadsheets and Venmo history exported and saved.
